E3 2007: Gamecock's "E3 Up in Smoke" funeral
Posted on: 04:12:22 PM on July 16, 2007

The doors to the Barker Hangar close. E3 coordinators shuffle out the last of the dwindling bloggers while Attack of the Show fanboys scrutinize the G4TV stage for the left-behind loose hairs of Olivia Munn. E3 2007 has officially closed down and the herds of game developers are slowly replaced by the So-cal beach barbies. For most of the E3 2007 veterans, the constant shuffling between air conditioned hotel suites and sponsored dinners had left them all tired and dazed, happy to return to their respective computer rooms to get away from video games for the first time in three days. But for those of us looking for a more conclusive wrap-up to the new E3, Gamecock held the un-official E3 funeral titled "E3 Up in Smoke", marking the end of an old gaming conference and the dawning of a new one brimming with hope, gaming, and plenty of zombies on unicorns (hopefully, anyway).

Mr. Destructoid and the Destructoid team were there in full force to attend, naturally, with the Robot himself making his way to the stage to deliver his very own E3 eulogy. To experience the mourning of the old E3 via photos and Mr. Destructoid's very own speech, hit the jump!

Golden Sun sequel confirmed as fake, tears flow like wine
Posted on: 04:12:22 PM on July 16, 2007
By: BlueWolf72

Recently, the Internet spawned a rumor amidst all the excitement of E3 that a sequel to the heavily under-appreciated Golden Sun series was coming to the Nintendo DS. Like fish on those tiny, delicious fishflakes Joystiq, GoNintendo and other sites pounced, working furiously to spread the news as quickly as their tiny, malformed hands could. That night, their heads filled with gumdrops and thoughts of handheld RPG action, many children went to bed happy. Sadly, as is so often the case, those children were all idiots.
Vooks.net -- Australia's answer to descending from criminals and rapists -- has an interview up with the perpetrator of the hoax, a member of their own forums, a fellow who goes by the obtusely ironic name 'Opium'. It seems that Mr. Opium created the clever faςade to convince Nintendo that the series had a large fanbase and that we actually want to see more Golden Sun titles.
I'd like to say he's a jerk, or some other form of condemnation, but I totally agree with the guy, and obviously his rumor was convincing enough to attract the attentions of people whose eyes have glazed over from years of photovoltaic abuse. Golden Sun is almost completely forgotten in light of all the Final Fantasy's and Dragon Quest's, and in a world where the most striking thing about Nintendo's E3 showing was the same technology they employed in the Power Pad, that's truly a shame.

This week's VC releases: Paper Mario and some games that aren't Paper Mario
Posted on: 04:12:22 PM on July 16, 2007
By: BlueWolf72

Now you can stop whining -- after an excruciatingly long wait, the North American Virtual Console is finally getting Paper Mario (Nintendo 64, 1 player, 1,000 Wii Points). It will be joined by two games that it completely overshadows, Balloon Fight (NES, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points) and Silent Debuggers (TurboGrafx-16, 1 player, 600 Wii Points).
While everyone will be fawning over the classic Nintendo 64 role-playing game, I'm having teary eyed memories over the NES Joust rip-off, Balloon Fight. You see, I actually lost my virginity listening to that game's music in the back of a '87 Ford Bronco. OK, that's not a true story, but I often wonder what that might have been like.
Hit the jump for the full press release.

E3 2007: Iron Man impressions
Posted on: 04:12:22 PM on July 16, 2007
By: BlueWolf72

Next May, Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow will star in Iron Man, a film based off of the popular Marvel comic book superhero. And what would it a big budget Hollywood action film be without an accompanying videogame?
Behind closed doors, Sega and developer Secret Level (shouldn't these guys be working on the next-gen Golden Axe?) demoed an extremely early version of the game running on an Xbox 360. Hit the jump for my full impressions of the short demo that was cut even shorter when the unit it was being played on locked up.
I wonder if Microsoft also extended the warranty for dev kits ...

EIEIO 2007: Hands-on with Fury; this game is HOT
Posted on: 04:12:22 PM on July 16, 2007
By: BlueWolf72

Fury is an upcoming MMO game that strips away all the grinding and leveling of games like Everquest or World of Warcraft and jumps right down to the nitty gritty of PvP while still retaining the things that make RPG's so great. And it does this well, believe it or not. In fact, this game feels a lot more like Quake III Arena meets Guild Wars than anything else. Luckily, Quake III and Guild Wars are better than camel sex, so Fury's got a good thing going for it.
Hit the jump for motivation to wipe those crumbs off your Blizzard tee and head to your local game store come early October ...
